- The exterior of 1978 Firebird didn't change much since the introduction of the third generation of the model in 1982. However new engine was added to the model line—5736 cc (350 ci) V8 available only with 4-speed automatic transmission—700R-4—previously offered only in Corvette. This engine was the best engine installed in a third generation Firebird yet. The 4999 cc (305 ci) TPI engine was now available with a manual transmission.
