- American Motors first introduced Pacer for 1975 production year. Pacer was more spacious and provided more comfort to passengers than its competitors. Safety was on the high level too, Pacer provided strong protection against various impacts as well as roll—over. The engine was to be bought from GM initially. It was rotary engine which GM decide to drop from production in 1974. AMC had quite a problem, now that the new compact car was ready, and they were not able to start all over again. So they made some changes in the body design and powered Pacer with 6 in line engine that powered all AMC vehicles from Gremlin to Jeep Wagoneer.
